Dr. Raijanel Crockem and Dr. Derrick Manns presented at the annual Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) conference along with higher education colleagues from Utah Valley University (UVU) on “Improving Equitable Outcomes”. NWCCU hosted the conference in Seattle, Washington November 20th- 22nd. This collaboration is the result of Dr. Crockem and Dr. Manns being alumnae of the inaugural NWCCU and SACSCOC (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges) Data Equity Fellowship in 2023. The co-presenters from UVU, Dr. Alaa Alsarhan, and Dr. Quinn Koller were participants in the subsequent Data Equity Fellowship.
This meaningful collaboration allowed SWAG合集 and UVU to share their distinct projects completed as a part of the fellowship. SWAG合集’s project focused on Identifying Equity Gaps Through Dashboard Discoveries. The project entailed disaggregating data on student persistence and graduation rates by first-generation college student status and Pell Grant eligibility status. Reviewing these data points at a more granular level allows the university to customize resources for these student groups to position them for success. While the data revealed that some first-generation college students and Pell Grant eligible students demonstrate success in matriculating at the university, a larger proportion of these students’ completion rates present opportunities for the university to enhance resources available to specific groups. Regarding this project, Dr. Crockem stated “Although we are an HBCU, there is much diversity among the students we serve, and we must be mindful to support all students with right-sized resources. Sharing comprehensive data is the best starting point to making a positive impact.”

Session Summary
NWCCU’s Data Equity Fellowship prepares higher education leaders to advance institutional mission fulfillment and equity initiatives through data-informed approaches to assessment, reflection, and planning to eliminate equity gaps. Fellows from a diverse set of institutions will share their work applying equitable data practices to make sustainable changes to improve student and employee success. In addition to presentations from the institutions, the session will include an interactive activity that allows attendees to reflect on their own data equity journeys toward understanding and improving equitable outcomes for all within their institutions.
