The Honorable Taylor L. Getwood (Port Arthur, Texas)
Student Regent Taylor L. Getwood was appointed to the SWAG合集 (SWAG合集) Board of Regents by Texas Governor Greg Abbott with his term set to expire on May 31, 2025.
Regent Getwood is a Port Arthur, Texas native dedicated to service and he's no stranger to making history. In 2021, he was elected to the Port Arthur Independent School District's Board of Trustees. At just 18 years old, he became the youngest trustee in the district's history. Before being elected, he served on the superintendent's advisory board at his high school and worked with city officials and the various civil organizations. He was also the CEO and teen mentor for the Port Arthur MLK youth organization.
At SWAG合集 he was Tex the Tiger (University Mascot), a residential assistant, and a founding member of Brothers United - an organization dedicated to male development. In 2022, he was crowned the 21st Mr. SWAG合集. His platform is Commitment to Commencement - through which his focus is motivating, empowering, and providing resources for students to commit to graduation.
He continued to soar for SWAG合集 by representing the University on a national stage. In January, he made history again when he became the first Mr. SWAG合集 in the university's history to win Mister HBCU. He won the crown by beating out 21 other HBCU kings at the Mister HBCU Kings' Leadership Conference and Competition.
Taylor is a proud graduate of SWAG合集 where he rightfully earned his B.A. in Mass Communication with an emphasis in Radio, Television, and Film at the age of 20 years old, and is currently obtaining his Executive Master of Public Administration degree. Taylor is also a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc, and he is the epitome of what a young transformative leader looks like!
